Dr.Ambedkar, One Of The Strongest Critics Of Islam

Written by

Dr. BR.Ambedkar's Views On Islam & Muslims in his book  “Pakistan or the Partition of India”

Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar is known for vociferously exposing the superstitions & faultlines within Hinduism, something that the society has accepted and will always remain indebted to. But not many people know what opinion he had about Islam. He advocated for the upliftment of Muslim Women and spoke sternly against the Caste System within Islam too. This is not a BJP-RSS-NDA-Hindutva Brigade Narrative. What you are about to read is from his book called : Pakistan or the Partition of India

 Chapter IV: Breakup of Unity

The Muslim invaders came to India singing a hymn of hate against the Hindus. Islam’s growth is so thick in Northern India that the remnants of Hindu and Buddhist culture are just shrubs. Even the Sikh axe could not fell this oak.”

Chapter IV : Pakistan & the Malaise

Dr. Ambedkar on Pardah and Discrimination against Muslim Women

“Purdah deprives Muslim women of mental and moral nourishment. Being deprived of healthy social life, the process of moral degeneration must and does set in. Being completely secluded from the outer world, they engage their minds in petty family quarrels, with the result that they become narrow and restricted in their outlook.

They lag behind their sisters from other communities, cannot take part in any outdoor activity and are weighed down by a slavish mentality and an inferiority complex. They have no desire for knowledge, because they are taught not to be interested in anything outside the four walls of the house. Purdah women in particular become helpless, timid, and unfit for any fight in life. Considering the large number of purdah women among Muslims in India, one can easily understand the vastness and seriousness of the problem of purdah.”

Chapter VI: Pakistan and Malaise :

“The Muslim woman is the most helpless person in the world. This insecurity is greatly augmented by the right of polygamy and concubinage. Mahomedan Law allows a Muslim to marry four wives at a time. In addition to the four legal wives, the Muslim Law permits a Mahomedan to cohabit with his female slaves. In the case of female slaves nothing is said as to the number. They are allowed to him without any restriction whatever and without any obligation to marry them.

No words can adequately express the great and many evils of polygamy and concubinage, and especially as a source of misery to a Muslim woman. It is true that because polygamy and concubinage are sanctioned, one must not suppose they are indulged in by the generality of Muslims; still the fact remains that they are privileges which are easy for a Muslim to abuse to the misery and unhappiness of his wife.”

 Chapter X : Social Stagnation

The Muslim agitation against Abolition of Child Marriage was amalgamated into the National Civil Disobedience Movement

“Muslims opposed the Child-Marriage Bill brought in the Central Assembly in 1930, whereby the age for marriage of a girl was raised to 14 and of a boy to 18 on the ground that it was opposed to the Muslim canon law. Not only did they oppose the bill at every stage but that when it became law they started a campaign of Civil Disobedience against that Act. Fortunately the Civil Disobedience campaign of the Muslims against the Act did not swell and was submerged in the Congress Civil Disobedience campaign which synchronized with it.”

Thus, Dr. Ambedkar says that Muslims never took part in the national civil disobedience movement, but that their protest against the abolition of child marriage was shown as a part of the national civil disobedience movement.

Chapter X : Social Stagnation

Dr. Ambedkar criticized Islam for Caste system. Mahomedans observe not only caste but also untouchability.

Chapter XII : National Frustration

“Wherever there is a conflict between Muslim law and the law of the land, the former must prevail over the latter and a Muslim will be justified in obeying the Muslim law and defying the law of the land.”

Chapter XII : National Frustration

“The brotherhood of Islam is not the universal brotherhood of man. It is brotherhood of Muslims for Muslims only. Islam can never allow a true Muslim to adopt India as his motherland and regard a Hindu as his kith and kin.”

Chapter XII : National Frustration

Dr. Ambedkar exposes fake Muslim Patriotism:

Dr. Ambedkar reinstates a long forgotten fact that most of the muslim freedom fighters declared jihad against British Colonialism because India was a Dar-ul-Harb and not an Islamic ruled Dar-ul-Islam.

“According to Muslim Canon Law, the world is divided into two camps, Dar-ul-lslam (abode of Islam), and Dar-ul-Harb (abode of war). A country is Dar-ul-lslam when it is ruled by Muslims. A country is Dar-ul-Harb when Muslims only reside in it but are not rulers of it. That being the Canon Law of the Muslims, India cannot be the common motherland of the Hindus and the Musalmans. It can be the land of the Musalmans—but it cannot be the land of the 'Hindus and the Musalmans living as equals.' Further, it can be the land of the Musalmans only when it is governed by the Muslims. The moment the land becomes subject to the authority of a non-Muslim power, it ceases to be the land of the Muslims. Instead of being Dar-ul-lslam it becomes Dar-ul-Harb.”

Chapter XII : National Frustration

Dr. Ambedkar on Jihad:

“Not only can they proclaim Jihad, but they can call the aid of a foreign Muslim power to make Jihad a success, or if the foreign Muslim power intends to proclaim a Jihad, help that power in making its endeavour a success.”

Example- Khilafat Movement (1919-1924)

Dr. Ambedkar on Status of Non Muslims:

“To the Muslims a Hindu is a Kaffir. A Kafir is not worthy of respect. He is low-born and without status. That is why a country which is ruled by a Kaffir is Dar-ul-Harb to a Musalman. Given this, no further evidence seems to be necessary to prove that the Muslims will not obey a Hindu government. The basic feelings of deference and sympathy, which predispose persons to obey the authority of government, do not simply exist.”
